Biodiversity, arboriculture, and sustainability services in NSW

ESEA provides three connected groups of environmental services in New South Wales.

Biodiversity services cover statutory ecological assessment requirements, including Biodiversity Development Assessment Reports (BDARs), Reviews of Environmental Factors (REFs), vegetation management plans (VMPs), threatened species surveys, Controlled Activity Approval advice, fauna surveys using thermal imaging, drones, and eDNA, dam dewatering and fauna rescue, and independent peer review.

Arboriculture services cover arboricultural impact assessments (AIA), project arborist support, tree risk assessment, habitat replacement, and clearing supervision.

Sustainability advisory services cover report scoping, ESG support, ESIA scoping, management plans, community needs assessment, and technical peer review.

Biodiversity assessment and ecological advisory

Statutory assessment and ecological advice under the NSW Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016, the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979, and the Water Management Act 2000, led and reviewed by a BAM Accredited Assessor.

Biodiversity Development Assessment Reports and Flora and Fauna Assessments

Statutory biodiversity assessment for development in NSW, from a preliminary constraints check to a full BDAR under the Biodiversity Assessment Method.

Project Ecologist

An ecologist embedded with your project team from concept design through approval, construction, and post-approval compliance.

Review of Environmental Factors

Environmental assessment for activities carried out without development consent under Division 5.1 of the EP&A Act, including utility and infrastructure works.

Vegetation Management Plans

Practical, council-ready plans for protecting, restoring, and monitoring retained vegetation and rehabilitation areas.

Biodiversity Stewardship

Feasibility advice, site assessment, and support for landholders considering a Biodiversity Stewardship Agreement and biodiversity credits.

Controlled Activity Approvals

Waterfront land assessment, exemption advice, and application support for controlled activities on waterfront land, generally measured within 40 metres of the highest bank of a river, lake, or estuary.

Targeted Species Surveys

Surveys designed around a target threatened species, in the season and conditions the NSW guidelines require.

Ecological Research and Monitoring

Designed studies, baseline surveys, and long-term monitoring for councils, agencies, and research and education organisations.

Wildlife Drone Surveys

Aerial inspection and imagery for fauna, nests, hollows, and canopy features that are difficult to assess from the ground.

eDNA Assessments

Environmental DNA sampling and laboratory analysis to investigate whether a target species is present without trapping it.

Thermal Fauna Surveys

Thermal imaging of buildings, cavities, and hollow-bearing trees before demolition or clearing.

Aquatic Assessments

Habitat, water quality, and species assessment for waterways affected by development or dewatering.

Dam Dewatering and Fauna Rescue

Aquatic ecology reporting, staged drawdown supervision, and fauna salvage under the authorisations and permits applicable to the project.

Ecological Peer Review

Independent review of BDARs, biodiversity assessments, and ecological reports for councils, proponents, and legal teams.

Sustainability and environmental advisory

Proportionate support for organisations seeking to understand, organise, and report environmental and sustainability information, led by our environmental and sustainability consultants.

Sustainability Reporting

Scoping, data organisation, and proportionate advisory support for organisations preparing sustainability reports.

ESG Advisory

Support identifying material environmental, social, and governance topics and organising the evidence behind them.

ESIA Scoping

Defining the issues, studies, and specialist inputs an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment will need.

Environmental and Social Management Plans

Plans that turn assessment findings into controls, responsibilities, and monitoring through construction and operation.

Community Needs Assessment

Evidence-based assessment of what a community needs, to inform project design and social outcomes.

Sustainability Peer Review

Independent technical review of sustainability and ESG documentation against its nominated framework.

Arboriculture and tree management

Arboricultural assessment and project support delivered as an integrated part of our environmental consultancy, so tree impacts, habitat values, and ecological constraints are assessed consistently across the same project.

Arboricultural Impact Assessments

Tree surveys, retention value, Tree Protection Zones, and Structural Root Zones to AS 4970:2025, in the format council requires.

Project Arborist

Tree protection advice, hold-point inspections, and certification through the life of a construction project.

Tree Risk Assessment

Likelihood and consequence of tree failure assessed using the ISA tree-risk methodology, with proportionate management options.

Nest Box and Tree Hollow Relocation

Salvaged hollows, artificial habitat, and nest boxes to replace habitat lost to clearing, with formal installation certification provided.

Vegetation Clearing Supervision and Certification

Pre-clearing surveys, fauna spotter-catcher attendance during clearing, and the formal certification your consent requires.
HOW THE SERVICES FIT TOGETHER

One team from constraints to certification

Most projects need more than one of these services, and the order matters.

A biodiversity due diligence review or Flora and Fauna Assessment early in design helps establish the approval pathway and identify the main ecological constraints. That informs the project design layout, which can in turn affect whether a BDAR, Controlled Activity Approval, arboricultural impact assessment, or vegetation management plan is required.

Once consent or approval is granted, the same evidence can carry into pre-clearing surveys, clearing supervision, habitat replacement, and certification. By delivering these services as one integrated team, ESEA ensures your project ecologist maintains an in-depth understanding of your project, enabling them to provide informed, strategic, and timely advice throughout each stage of development to support successful project outcomes.
